Install the dry box

Replace the temporary filament path with the production path.

  1. Place the dry box in its working position

    Choose a location that allows a smooth PTFE route back to the printer.

  2. Re-route the filament path through the dry box

    Replace any temporary setup path with the final production path.

  3. Check for low-friction feed geometry

    The PTFE path should stay smooth, supported, and free of hard bends or crushing.

  4. Keep humidity below 20%

    Place desiccant bags at the bottom of the dry box and watch the front humidity indicator. Keep the dry box below 20% humidity whenever possible. Replace or recharge the desiccant when the reading starts to climb.

  5. Dry new filament before printing

    When you unpack a new spool, place it in the dry box and run a 6-hour drying cycle at 60 C. Turn off the heat after the cycle and let the spool cool for 4 hours before printing.

  6. Re-dry stored filament only when needed

    If a spool has been sitting for a few days, you can run one more 6-hour drying cycle at 60 C, then let it cool before printing. Treat this as occasional maintenance, at most once per week. After 2 or 3 heat cycles on the same spool, replace the spool if print quality drops.

  7. What not to do: do not load two spools

    Do not put two spools inside the dry box. The spools can rub against each other and against the box, which adds friction and tension at the extruder. That can cause abrupt print stops or intermittent extrusion.

  8. What not to do: do not heat filament while printing

    Do not keep the dry box heated during printing. Active heat during a print can damage the filament and reduce print quality. Use controlled pre-print drying, low humidity, and a cooled spool.

Before you finish

  • The dryer box is positioned.
  • The filament path has been re-routed for production use.
  • The PTFE route stays smooth and kink-free.
  • Desiccant bags are at the bottom of the dry box.
  • The front humidity indicator is below 20% whenever possible.
  • Only one spool is loaded in the dry box.
  • New filament has completed a 6-hour drying cycle at 60 C and cooled for 4 hours before printing.
  • Stored filament is re-dried only when needed, not more than once per week.
  • The dry box heat is off while printing.
